By giving their time for free, lawyers are expanding the scope of their work through partnerships with NGOs. From cracking human-trafficking chains to providing safe havens for vulnerable children, these collaborations prove to be vital for NGOs that are often working with tight budgets.
Deborah Papworth Compton was an employment lawyer at Linklaters and also serving as the firms Pro Bono Programme coordinator when she came across a request from an international NGO, Hagar International (Hong Kong) seeking support in Cambodia.
Another of Hagar’s key legal supporters is White & Case, which has been leading pro bono work on the use of protective measures for vulnerable victims. “We are hoping to do a comparative study showing how protective measures used in Cambodia compare with other countries, specifically Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong,” says Melody Chan, a partner at White & Case.
